Two flights of timber steps with handrails leading up to the Downslink
Surrey County Council approached us to replace the existing hillside steps accessing the Downslink in Cranleigh.
Barnwood was tasked with undertaking the entire project including the groundwork involved. We built these two rural staircases in freshly sawn green Oak, each string supported by seven green Oak posts which were evenly placed and concreted at the base.
Each staircase string was fitted with 22 pairs of equally spaced timber cleats to accept the treads. As these staircases are outdoors and are to be used in all weather conditions, we decided to use ribbed, anti-slip, grit-slipped Oak deck boards for the treads. These were wide enough to be comfortably used by walkers wearing large boots and wellies. We also fitted a handrail and middle rail between the posts for additional support and safety.
This project was completed on time and within budget and the steps are in constant use by walkers to access the Downslink.
