Oak Pergola

An Oak pergola with decorative corbel details, curved braces, and trellis.

We were asked to create a pergola with an enclosed and sheltered feel for use as an outdoor dining area. Our client had a clear vision of how this pergola should look and had researched the design well. Over site visits and email, we were able to create a design that encompassed all the required features and protected the thoroughfares and height clearance needed.

After much consideration, monies were found within the budget to use planed-all-round green Oak timbers to improve the aesthetic further.

Access was challenging for this project, and the materials had to be brought in through the client’s home.  We used extensive dust sheets and boards to protect.

We mounted the Oak posts on brick plinths and used a combination of scarf and mortise-and-tenon joints to construct the pergola.   Structural braces further supported the pergola and were cut with a curve to add to the aesthetic.  A wrap-around corbeling detail was added to each post, with a chamfered edge to the top timbers.

The pergola was finished with softwood trellis panels to complete the finished piece.  The collaborative approach allowed us to create this beautiful feature, borne from our client’s imagination.

Work Completed – November 2023 and March 2024

“We are so glad we chose Barnwood to build our new pergola. We wanted something quite bespoke for our period property and knew we needed a genuine specialist to make it happen. Right from the first contact about our ideas, during all our conversations about the design, and throughout the construction process, Richard, Tabitha, and the whole team were unfailingly helpful and utterly professional. They were excellent. We couldn’t be happier with the quality of the build, the speed and efficiency with which they worked, and their tremendous skill. We love the result and look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.”
