Softwood Pergola

A softwood pergola with curved braces.

This client tasked us with creating a beautiful seating area by constructing a timber-framed pergola over the pre-existing patio and sleeper platform.

We discussed the pros and cons of both softwood and green Oak and the client decided to use softwood as this is less likely to move and leach tannins during the drying process.

Our client was keen to maximise every last inch of space and was concerned that brickwork plinths would encroach on this.  To solve this, we fitted the posts directly into the patio with a concealed resin-bonded bolt fixing and a small square of lead between the post and platform to create a “shadow gap”.

The pergola consists of four post and two beam construction, fitted with thirteen rafters and eight braces with decorative curves cut into the underside.

The result is a stunning seating area looking out over the West Sussex countryside which will be enjoyed for years to come by all the family.
