Stepping Stones Bridge

Full refurbishment of Stepping Stones Footbridge, Dorking, including the replacement of all the timber elements.

Surrey County Council approached us to carry out the full refurbishment of this beautiful 18 metre footbridge in Dorking.  We were tasked with replacing all timber elements of this bridge which had begun to rot and become unsafe to use.

A key challenge for this project was access as the bridge is situated in woodlands at Box Hill, and due to it being such a large bridge, we needed to move a great deal of Oak to our worksite, not to mention our tools.

After assessing the pathways, we were able to use our small 4×4 and trailer to safely transport all the timbers and tools to the bridge, using the woodland footpaths.

Another key challenge was how to lift each end of the bridge safely to remove and replace the end bearers.  After calculating the required lift, we were able to use heavy-duty bottle jacks to support the bridge whilst replacing these large timbers.

We successfully completed the bridge refurbishment and removed all the waste materials from the site.   We were able to deliver this on time and within budget.

This beautiful landmark footbridge is fully restored and will safely carry future generations over the river Mole for many years to come.
