Timber Steps & Stairs

Bespoke Timber Construction Steps and Stairs

Our timber garden steps are carefully crafted to suit your outdoor space. Whether you want to improve access from one level to another or create a more welcoming transition between your patio and lawn, our bespoke steps will blend seamlessly with your garden’s aesthetic. We pay particular attention to safety and durability, including sturdy handrails and grooved timber surfaces to reduce slip risks, even in wet weather.  We can also incorporate ramped areas to help increase accessibility for all.

Benefits

Enhancing your garden with steps provides a range of benefits, including:

Unlocking New Views: Timber steps can open up entirely new vantage points in your garden, allowing you to appreciate features that were previously out of reach.

Improving Access: No more struggling up and down a steep slope or navigating a muddy bank. Our timber steps make it easy to enjoy every corner of your property.

Enhancing Safety: With robust handrails and grooved, non-slip timber, you’ll feel secure and confident traversing different levels, even in damp or slippery conditions.

Garden Step Restoration

Where you have an existing construction in place, we can replace any rotten or warped timbers with sympathetic replacements, even sourcing reclaimed timber to retain visual appeal. During restoration, we also check the stability of underlying supports, ensuring your steps meet modern safety standards and stand the test of time.

Materials

For most of our garden steps and stairs constructions, we either use C24 softwood timbers or green oak. The choice will depend on our budget and the design aesthetic that we will agree with you at the start of the project. For areas where there is constant flooding or boggy conditions, we can opt to use recycled plastic posts and boards, giving you a long-lasting, eco-friendly solution that won’t warp or rot in wet environments.

Benefits Over Concrete Steps

Cost: Timber steps can often be more cost-effective than concrete alternatives, especially for custom designs and unusual layouts.

Longevity: Quality timber, properly treated, will last for many years and can be more forgiving than concrete, which might crack or sink over time.

Safety (Non-Slip Timber): Grooved or textured timber surfaces are less slippery than smooth concrete, helping to reduce the risk of falls.

Environmental Impact: Timber is a natural, renewable resource, and using it can have a lower carbon footprint than concrete.

Location Flexibility: Timber can blend into natural landscapes more organically, making it ideal for gardens and countryside settings.

Our quotation process

However you choose to contact us, we will arrange a mutually convenient time to visit you and discuss your project.  We will take time to fully understand what it is you need and how you want it to look, talking through different design and material options, and considering alternative approaches. After this meeting, we will put together a detailed written quotation or estimate which we will send to you via email for your consideration.

Our approach to working with you

From the moment you give us instruction, we get to work.  Once we have an agreed start date to work towards, we take time to select the best possible materials for your project and order these in a timely fashion to avoid delays to our build.  Richard will occasionally carry out a second site visit to finalise measurements and material choices, and to brief one of our senior carpenter team.   For larger projects, we may ask for a deposit to cover the initial purchase of the materials.  Then we will invoice in stage payments, or at the end of the build – this we will agree with you in advance.

On the agreed project start date, our team will arrive at 8am with all the tools and materials they need to begin work.  We take great care to work carefully and tidily, using where needed dustsheets and carpet protectors inside, and tarpaulins and ground mats outside.  We liaise with our clients throughout the build and discuss any issues or findings as they happen.  It is important to us that our clients have a voice and that we listen to what you say.  We will always be as flexible as we can and explain everything that we do.

At the end of the build, we leave the site neat and tidy.  We remove and lawfully dispose of all waste (unless otherwise agreed).  It is only once our client has signed off the work that we will submit our final invoice.  We want you to be happy!

We offer continued support to our clients and will provide you with maintenance and care suggestions for your build.  If you have any concerns or questions, we are always happy to hear from you and will help in any way we can.

Standards and Safety

The health and safety of our team, clients, and members of the public is always at the centre of everything we do.  We are constantly evaluating, monitoring, and improving our systems of work to ensure we work efficiently and safely.  We utilise the expertise of the Federation of Master Builders to bolster our Health & Safety knowledge and to keep up to date with all the latest advice and guidance.  We want you to feel safe and have confidence in us.
