This raised softwood decking area with balustrade provides a versatile and adaptable space to enjoy the fabulous views with friends and family.
This was our second large project for these clients. Having recently moved to a new home, the time had come to approach their garden, which slopes steeply away from the house. This raised decking project was designed by Barnwood Carpentry to provide a continuation of their living space outdoors, creating a practical and attractive extension to the existing patio area whilst avoiding the price tag of attempting to level the area with a large landscaping project.
The works involved careful ground preparation, installation of a suitable sub-frame to adequately support and stabilise the decking area, and the installation of the Ascot reeded deck boards. A softwood balustrade was also added for safety as well as aesthetics.
It was important to isolate the subframe from ground contact to help protect the softwood long term. The frame was supported by concrete spurs. C24 softwood timbers were used to ensure strength and longevity.
The decking layout was designed to maximise the available space, forming an approximate total area of 28.5m². This included a 12m² section projecting from the existing patio and a 16.5m² triangular section extending above the garden steps, creating a smooth transition between levels and improving usability of the garden.
The treated softwood reeded Ascot deck boards were laid parallel to the house, providing a clean and contemporary look. A softwood balustrade with hand and base rails, complemented by square-edged spindles, was installed around the perimeter to ensure safety while maintaining an open feel and uninterrupted views across the garden.
The project was completed with careful attention to detail throughout, resulting in a high-quality outdoor space tailored to the client’s needs.
“Thanks again to you both and the team. See you on the next project!“
